“Living with a disability is an exercise in learning to cope with loneliness.”When this sentence is spoken, by a secondary character in Yuki Fumino’s I Hear the Sunspot: Limit 2, the experience of inner devastation shot through me like a hot bullet. What made this sentence so powerful was that this book doesn’t trade in emotional manipulation or cheap empathy. It’s a tough, honest look at how people with and without disabilities interact and find ways to live their lives. It’s also a beautifully crafted work of art that has multiple narrative threads, threads that crystalize into a unified whole as soon as this sentence is uttered. Art, empathy, and understanding combine to hit with the gravitational force of a keystone dropped into place at the summit of an arch, locking the whole together.Although I haven’t read many graphic novels, I woke up the morning after finishing I Hear the Sunspot: Limit 2 thinking about both the characters and the story. I’ve read a handful of book-length manga this past year, yet none have hit me as hard as this one. Limit 2 continues the story of Kohei, who is hearing impaired, and Taichi, his long-time friend and, more recently, boyfriend, as their young adult lives start taking them in different directions. From artwork to plot to pacing, this graphic novel is exceptional.When I started the books, with I Can Hear the Sunspot Limit: 1, I hadn’t realized that there were two previous books in the series and one more to be published (Limit, or volume, 3 will be published in April 2020 in Japan; the release date of the English version, published by One Peace Books, is unclear. Spanish and Italian versions of the books are also available). Nor had I realized that the earlier books were made into a movie in Japan (I’d love to see it, if there is a version with English subtitles). Clearly, this is a popular series with many fans, and its status is well deserved.The artwork is astonishing. From composition to page design to mood and emotional impact, the art never misses a beat. Notice, for instance, the beautiful, refined drawing of the hands and the subtle messages that they convey – both in terms of body language but also of signing, as many of the characters sign in Japanese because they are hearing impaired, know someone who is hearing impaired, or work for a company that serves the deaf community. Drawings of group scenes, showing many figures in a variety of poses, dress, and moods, could easily be overlooked because the story and art are seamlessly integrated. But take some time to appreciate the thought and care with which these scenes are composed and the qualities of line and texture that make each different. Then consider the beautifully drawn cityscapes surrounding the figures. Notice the subtle variations in visual characterizations used in each character – and how these seemingly effortless refinements are carried throughout the book (for instance, Taichi and Ryu, a game developer who has been deaf from birth, both share a similar facial type, but Ryu has an almost imperceptible curve to his nose, eyes placed over his cheeks at a more acute angle, and a straighter, more visible forehead). Then relish – and I do mean relish – the beguiling range of visual emotions found on the face of each character. Fumino’s artwork has a nuanced palette of emotions, expressed through a complex dance of relationships between facial features and the way that they are depicted through line and tone, that is masterful.The artwork alone is reason to read this book, but the plot and pacing are thoroughly considered and skillfully delivered. The story has multiple threads, not all of which seem to connect, at first, but which ultimately intertwine and add dimension to the characters, setting, and themes of the novel. Fumino knows how to transition from one scene to another, building emotion, tension, passion, and even frustration as Kohei and Taichi try to reestablish their once-close friendship within the context of a more challenging, and, confusingly, unconsummated romantic relationship. As the narrative unfolds, the confusing emotions, psychological toll, and ethical quandaries surrounding Kohei’s disability find echoes in the lives of the people around them.If I had a complaint about the book, it’s that I need to wait to see the conclusion. I wonder how quickly I could learn Japanese, if it meant getting the next volume a little faster…. ~4 StarsTaichi and Kohei are still struggling to settle into their relationship. Kohei is having a harder time with accepting what his deafness could do to their relationship, especially when he learns more about why Taichi is going for the career he is. Whereas Taichi has seemed to accept the difference in their relationship—despite how he's still learning about some of the difficulties and how to handle it,—Kohei is feeling like the burden in the relationship.This has been culminating for a while, but after a few things are revealed, they're forced to confront it. This volume gets hard to take a few times. It's a struggle between them, and it's a struggle to watch, because I just want them to be happy together, but they've got a ways to go still.
