I feel like I should start this with a content warning that there is no sex in this book. It’s vaguely alluded to and vaguely, vaguely, vaguely described, but pretty much no. Which I feel was the start of my dissatisfaction. I expected sex.Second, I think a lot of other reviews have captured the range of good/bad on the romance and oddities of this book, so I’m just going to hit on the things that bothered me that I haven’t seen discussed in the other reviews.This could have been such a great slow-burn. The insta-love doesn’t happen until really late in the book, but they sort of stop hating each other a lot earlier. So there is all this middle-ground that seems really wasted. Because of this, along with the lack of descriptive sex, the insta-love (which I don’t mind if done right) felt really too unbelievable.There is another review that mentions some uncomfortableness with some of Romeo’s background being very stereotypical “black”. Like that reviewer, I’m also a middle-aged, well-off white lady, so I don’t feel I have the right or the background to comment on this, but I agree that it felt this way, especially in hindsight.It also bothered me that Romeo’s skin color was never mentioned in terms of race and racism, as I cannot imagine this was not an issue for him. I just don’t see how any interracial couple can get together without it coming up at least once, but it never did. Which was odd. And, as a white lady, I feel like I can comment on that. If Teddy never bothered to ask the love of his life about his experience as a black man, it seems pretty uncaring and oblivious. It would be something I would ask about in the context of a relationship.I imagine the author wanted to include a POC because there is such a lack of POC in romance novels, so that is great, but this character and romance felt problematic. At least from my middle-aged, white lady POV. I would leave it to people of color to hash out whether that does more harm than good.Finally, I really, really could not set aside my disbelief over the concept of a “smart vase”. Maybe I’m getting too old and they are already a thing or will be soon, but I cannot imagine shelling out whatever amount of money for this sort of thing. It seems so freakin’ ridiculous. I mean it’s supposed to monitor the water and tell you things to make your flowers last longer? Any idiot knows you change the water daily and trim the stems. This is not rocket science. Nobody needs a smart vase, and so I had issues with the whole premise of this book. I love a lot of Kim Fielding stuff, particularly the Bureau series. (I was aware before I bought this book that it wasn't going to be supernatural. ) That said, this book was a little boring and a lot contrived. "Eccentric rich person says so" is a hell of an unbelievable point to hang the rest of the plot on. I also didn't find it funny. I guess the humor was supposed to be slapstick? I'm one of those weirdos with no pictures in my head, so I didn't get any laughs from that, though I imagine the right actor would make the romcom movie funny.Sorry, I would pass on this one. If you haven't read their Bureau short stories, I would say to read those instead.
