Ebook About Onetime lovers, unexpected rivals...Emmett McCabe never expected to see Sydney Stevens—a woman with whom she'd shared a brief, incendiary connection before it all went up in flames—again. Luckily, ascending the cutthroat ladder of a high-pressure surgery residency to reach the top spot makes it easy to ignore what's missing in her life. Then Sydney reappears after nearly five years. Emmett is barely over her shock when she discovers Sydney is her new competition for the coveted chief's position everyone, including Emmett, expects will be hers.Professional rivalry and long-simmering passions create a combustible combination when the two are forced to work together, especially when past attractions won't stay buried.Book Passionate Rivals (A PMC Hospital Romance Book 4) Review :
Radclyffe is an excellent story teller. I've purchased probably 85% of her novels and I've loved almost all of them (usually 5 stars). I characterize her stories as mainly "medical thriller lesbian romance dramas" - yes, a lot of great genres in one book every time. So, I was greatly disappointed with this story. While it was extremely well-written, as usual, it contained significantly more medical focus and technical jargon and extensive descriptions of medical procedures. This is a great component of her novels which is based on her knowledge/experience as a surgeon, but this was excessive. At least 70% of the book focused on surgical procedures with so much detail, those passages were boring and lost my attention.Despite my low rating, I do recommend the story and absolutely the author. If I had never read any of Radclyffe's other books, this one probably would have had a 4 star rating. Since I was distracted and bored at various points and know that her stories are always more riveting, the rating went down. For $10, I felt this to be a bit short, and not as gripping as I'd thought it would be.The story flowed well enough, and the medical scenes were pretty good. I appreciated the efforts the author took to provide context so that I wasn't lost in the medical jargon. I felt I had a pretty good picture in my head of where everything was, how people looked, and the general atmosphere in each scene, and the progression of events felt immersive for me.The characters weren't bad, but weren't stellar. I liked them, but I keep comparing them to characters in another medical-scenario-related lesbian romance novel called Who'd Have Thought, that I read not too long ago, and enjoyed a lot. I've come to notice that I enjoy stories much more if characters backgrounds permeate their existence during the story. In this novel, we really only got a little glimpse into the main characters' backgrounds, and the Syd background felt a bit cliched. I'm not saying the motivation behind her behavior couldn't happen, but that it felt like the author was grabbing at low-hanging fruit.Part of what made the novel feel short, was the abrupt way in which both characters, with demonstrated strong personalities, just sort of got over themselves and decided to be "in love." I like a good ending, and they pretty much did end up the way I wanted them to, but it felt like the requisite journey to get there was missing. The interwoven journey toward a true connection just didn't seem to be present, leaving me with the idea that the two of them were just infatuated with each others' bodies, and I'd be expecting a break-up to be happening within months, rather than a long-lasting true-love relationship that their mentors appeared to have.Perhaps I'm being too critical, and I'm probably not a member of the author's target audience, but think the author could do better, especially for the price of the novel. I look forward to seeing if she does.
